Oxford Dictionaries added the word to its online dictionary (but not its printed one) this year, and named it their word of the year for 2013 after its usage jumped 17,000% in the past year, according to Reuters.

East Meets West at new California Arcade

A new arcade in Walnut Creek California blends west and east with a cool combination of photo booth’s and arcade games. Amy Bauer and her husband John Fouhy opened their arcade, named Smile Tu Inc., hoping to capitalize on the appeal of photo booths among young people. Over the years, Bauer, who lives in the Bay Area, hosted several Japanese exchange students. She often took the students and her two daughters to Japantown in San Francisco, where arcades with Japanese-style photo booths are very popular. The booths, which print out stickers, were always a hit with her daughters and the exchange students, who likely had taken plenty of photos in the booths at home in Japan, where they are known as Purikura booths.

Looking for an idea for a new business, Bauer struck on the photo booths which she’d seen during these trips, and created her small arcade, which features three photo booths, three old school arcade games, and two theme rooms for birthday parties and other celebrations. Patrons can pay $10 for 15 minutes of photo booth fun, including the use of props and wigs to create their own photo stickers. Check out the full story here.

What is Purikura?

Purikura is a style of photo booth that originated in Japan and continues to be very popular there. Purikura, which is short for “print club”, was introduced in the mid-1990’s in Japan and allows photo booth lovers to interact with their photos by adding designs, animated characters, writing on the photo using a stylus, and even editing facial features. When the photos are printed, they come out on sheets of stickers, which can be stuck just about anywhere and shared with friends. Purikura is so popular in Japan that there’s a whole culture that surrounds it and promotes certain editing techniques and photo taking strategy. Homemade Photo Booth Travels Worldwide

The “Face-O-Mat” photo booth is the creation of Swiss artist Tobias Gutmann, who has taken his homemade cardboard photo booth throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia, making prints for happy customers. The novel idea is made even more so by the fact that the Face-O-Mat is a fully manual machine, and the prints it produces aren’t photos, they’re paintings created by Gutmann himself. The artist sets up his photo booth, which is essentially a decorated cardboard box with a divider in the middle and a cut-out viewing square that allows him to see his subject’s face. Patrons pay through a cut-out slot in the divider, and Gutmann then paints a quick 3-minute sketch (with options for black and white or color), and “prints” the sketch (while making printer sounds) through another slot in the divider.
