Smartphone “Photo Booth” Creates Movie-Like Special Effects

Friday, October 25th, 2013

What do you get when you take 130 smartphones and arrange them in a circle? A smartphone photo booth! The booth in this video is a product demonstration video for a new smartphone processor, but the creative use of the phones as a photo booth is what really stands out here. Volunteers enter the circle of phones and perform acrobatic tricks while all 130 take pictures rapid-fire at the same time. The results are pretty impressive. The photos from this “photo booth” were edited and stitched together chronologically to make movie-like special effects. Check out the video here.

Creative Photo Booth Gets a Bird’s Eye View

Friday, October 25th, 2013

Bird watching is a favorite pastime of many, but it’s also a difficult one, because birds can easily get frightened by your presence and fly away. The new Bird Photo Booth is helping bird watching aficionados improve their bird watching abilities with a housing that mounts itself on a bird feeder. You can then put a smartphone camera or GoPro inside the housing (which protects it from the elements), and control the camera remotely. Birds come to the feeder, and you can get watch in real time and great close-up shots without scaring them away. A pretty unique concept, no? Check out more information here.

French Artist “JR” Uses Photo Booth as Art

Friday, October 18th, 2013

The 28-year-old French artist who goes only by the initials “JR” is in the process of embarking on an ambitious project that stretches across the globe. The project, known as “Inside Out” is an interactive endeavor, where participants take photos of themselves and upload them to Inside Out’s website. JR prints large 36 x 53 inch black and white posters of these pictures and sends them back to the participants, who then go and post the pictures in their communities. JR has stated that his goal for the project is to “transform messages of personal identity into works of art.” He also has said, “The idea is that you have to stand for what you care about.” JR is using a $100,000 grant that he received from winning the 2011 TED prize.

So far the project has sent more than 150,000 giant black and white photos around the world. However, in addition to these mailed photos, JR has also taken the photos to the source. Using a photo booth, which is sometimes stationary and sometimes set up on a truck, JR has taken his project to cities across Europe, Asia, North America. Most recently he brought his photo booth truck to London, where participants had their photo taken in the booth and then plastered the black and whites all around the city’s famous Somerset House.

Check out the project’s official website to learn more about JR’s innovate use of the photo booth as an art form here.
