In England, Speed Dating Gets Creative with a Photo Booth

They tend to do things a little differently across the pond. They drive on the left side of the road, they call fries chips, and they call soccer football. And now in one English bar they’re putting an English spin on speed dating by incorporating a photo booth.

How does it work? Participants in the speed dating event join each other in the photo booth after donning funny costumes. They can then take pictures and chat briefly before making room for the next participants. If someone enjoyed their photo booth session with another, they mark a tally next to their name on a list. If two daters mark a tally next to each others name, they receive the photo strip from their session at the end of the event in an envelope, which lets them know of the mutual interest.

Funny Photo Booth Engagement Photo

What better place than a photo booth to get engaged? You get a photo to preserve what will be a cherished memory, but you don’t have to hire a photographer to do so. It’s just you two and the camera, which makes for a special, intimate moment.

Layton Smith had the same thought last weekend, as he planned to propose to his girlfriend Chelsea Toston in a photo booth at the Oklahoma Aquarium. After taking in the sights, the two headed into a photo booth, where Chelsea chose a strip with an aquarium themed background to commemorate their visit. Layton then proposed and Chelsea said yes. The camera was rolling while the two shared their first kiss as fiances, but only after did they realize that the photo that caught their kiss was framed by a background featuring a beaver eying up a chewed up tree trunk. Toston, who posted the photo to the social media site reddit, wrote, “Had I known this was going to be our engagement photo, I might have chosen a different background.” Hopefully the couple will share plenty of laughs in the future over their unique engagement photo. New Book on Photo Booths Coming in May

There isn’t a ton of literature on the subject of photo booths, and it might be safe to say that there isn’t a non-fiction graphic novel that focuses exclusively on photo booths. Which makes it likely that Canadian artist Meags Fitzgerald’s upcoming book “Photobooth: A Biography,” which is due out in May of this year, will be the first.

 

Fitgerald chronicles the rise and fall of vintage chemical photobooths, from the inception of the modern-day photo booth in 1925 to preservation efforts taking place today. She does so through the medium of a graphic novel, which features an engaging layout of handwritten text and ink drawings that fill the pages. Here’s a brief excerpt from publisher Conundrum Press’ website:

 

For almost a century chemical photobooths have occupied public spaces, giving people the opportunity to quickly take inexpensive, quality photos. In the last decade these machines have started to rapidly disappear, causing an eclectic group of individuals from around the world to come together and respond. Illustrator, writer and long-time photobooth lover, Meags Fitzgerald has chronicled the photobooth’s fortuitous history and the events which gave rise to the desperate need to save them. Photo Booths: The Original Selfie

If you have a smartphone, you’re probably familiar with the term selfie. A selfie is a photo that you take of yourself with your phone. Oxford Dictionaries added the word to its online dictionary (but not its printed one) this year, and named it their word of the year for 2013 after its usage jumped 17,000% in the past year, according to Reuters.

 

While selfies are coming into vogue with the rise of the smartphone, the act of taking a selfie has actually been around for a lot longer than smartphones, or even cell phones. Photo booths were taking selfies long before they made it into the dictionary, and long before they were being uploaded to Facebook and Twitter. There’s something to be said for the approach a photo booth takes to a selfie. While the principle is the same at heart, taking a selfie with a photo booth is a decidedly rarer occasion than taking a selfie with your phone. This is what makes a photo booth special. While smartphones have brought with them many conveniences that we now take for granted, it’s important to remember that we couldn’t always snap selfies to our heart’s content. East Meets West at new California Arcade

A new arcade in Walnut Creek California blends west and east with a cool combination of photo booth’s and arcade games. Amy Bauer and her husband John Fouhy opened their arcade, named Smile Tu Inc., hoping to capitalize on the appeal of photo booths among young people. Over the years, Bauer, who lives in the Bay Area, hosted several Japanese exchange students. She often took the students and her two daughters to Japantown in San Francisco, where arcades with Japanese-style photo booths are very popular. The booths, which print out stickers, were always a hit with her daughters and the exchange students, who likely had taken plenty of photos in the booths at home in Japan, where they are known as Purikura booths.

Looking for an idea for a new business, Bauer struck on the photo booths which she’d seen during these trips, and created her small arcade, which features three photo booths, three old school arcade games, and two theme rooms for birthday parties and other celebrations. Patrons can pay $10 for 15 minutes of photo booth fun, including the use of props and wigs to create their own photo stickers. Check out the full story here.

What is Purikura?

Purikura is a style of photo booth that originated in Japan and continues to be very popular there. Purikura, which is short for “print club”, was introduced in the mid-1990’s in Japan and allows photo booth lovers to interact with their photos by adding designs, animated characters, writing on the photo using a stylus, and even editing facial features. When the photos are printed, they come out on sheets of stickers, which can be stuck just about anywhere and shared with friends. Purikura is so popular in Japan that there’s a whole culture that surrounds it and promotes certain editing techniques and photo taking strategy. Homemade Photo Booth Travels Worldwide

The “Face-O-Mat” photo booth is the creation of Swiss artist Tobias Gutmann, who has taken his homemade cardboard photo booth throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia, making prints for happy customers. The novel idea is made even more so by the fact that the Face-O-Mat is a fully manual machine, and the prints it produces aren’t photos, they’re paintings created by Gutmann himself. The artist sets up his photo booth, which is essentially a decorated cardboard box with a divider in the middle and a cut-out viewing square that allows him to see his subject’s face. Patrons pay through a cut-out slot in the divider, and Gutmann then paints a quick 3-minute sketch (with options for black and white or color), and “prints” the sketch (while making printer sounds) through another slot in the divider. Animal Photo Booth Raises Money For Shelter

Thanksgiving is just a week away, and after that Christmas will be here before you know it. Kids everywhere love getting their picture taken with Santa and putting in their Christmas wish requests, but this year, at the Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, animals got their chance to sit on Santa’s lap too. The animal shelter designed a homemade photo booth for their annual holiday bake sale and let pet lovers bring in their pets for a family photo with the big man himself. The event, appropriately dubbed “Santa Paws” raised money for the shelter, which is “central San Joaquin Valley’s largest no-kill shelter for dogs and cats.” Dogs, cats, and humans, were the most commonly photographed subjects, though Santa is also seen holding a rabbit in the photo spread.
